ABOUT ECOSUPERIOR
We
Are Your Green Community Organization
EcoSuperior was incorporated in 1994 by the Lakehead
Environmental Action Group (LEAG) in order to address
environmental issues for Thunder Bay and area. We
are a not-for-profit organization, operated by a
volunteer board of directors, with a paid staff
of 9 employees. Through partnerships with local
business and industry as well as all levels of government,
we strive to increase public awareness and participation
in building a cleaner, greener community and a healthy
environment. We are a member of Green Communities
Canada (GCC) and the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce.
EcoSuperior is a partnership organization,
and we acknowledge the support of the many community,
corporate and government partners who help make
our programs possible. We do not have core funding,
but rely on project funding from a variety of sources
to maintain the organization.
Our projects and programs focus on five
areas:
Water Conservation
EcoSuperior delivers the City of Thunder Bay Water
Conservation program, encouraging wise water usage
to homeowners as well as business and industry.
The residential program includes home visits and
incentives such as the $125 Toilet Replacement Rebate.
The commercial sector can access a similar toilet
rebate program through our office, in addition to
a free water audit service. Schoolchildren learn
about water conservation in our WaterWorks presentations
delivered to Grade 2 classes throughout the city.
Energy Conservation
A certified Energuide for Houses evaluator is
available for appointments through our office.
The program helps homeowners access federal grants
to help make homes more energy efficient.
Waste Reduction
At our office, consumers may purchase composters
and access advice and information on recycling
and other waste reduction practices. We coordinate
seasonal programs such as the Great Pumpkin Compost
Collection, Waste Reduction Week and Municipal
Clean Up Month.
Pollution Prevention
Currently, our Mercury Reduction project is promoting
ways to help reduce mercury discharge into our
environment, working in partnership with business,
industry and government. We have established recycling
programs for thermostats, fluorescent tubes and
button batteries. To address dioxins, we are coordinating
public outreach campaigns to eliminate the burning
of household garbage.
Greenspaces
We have developed a stream monitoring program
based on benthic macroinvertebrate sampling. Citizens
can participate to track the water quality in
their favourite stream or river. School classes
can also be involved, with classroom presentations
and sampling field trips. We also promote the
use of native plants at Central Natural Environment
Park, a project which features demonstration gardens.
