Save Energy Heating and Cooling Your Home and Office.
Adjusting your thermostat down in the winter and up in the summer can save you quite a lot of energy. Winter savings are approximately 2.2% per degree you lower your inside temperature. Summer saving are approximately 10% per degree you increase your inside temperature. These numbers are based on an average winter temperature of -15°C, summer temperature of 30°C and inside temperature of 23°C. Of course your savings will fluctuate based on the outside temperature but these numbers are used to give a general ballpark figure. The reason your summer savings seem higher than winter is because in winter you have a much larger change in temperature from inside to out so the change of one degree has less percent impact in the winter than summer.
**please note the closer your inside temperature is to the outside the less accurate the estimated energy savings -- this calculator is to give a general idea of savings and should not be used to provide accurate measurements**
Natural Resources Canada recommends during the winter you maintain a room temperature of 21°C for idle activities (such as watching tv, regular office duties), dropping to 18°C when you sleep and going even cooler when noone is in the building/home. In the summer dressing appropriately and cooling the building to 25°C is the suggested temperature. The temperatures you choose can be lower or higher than recommended it all depends on your personal comfort. Every bit of energy you save at your home and office reduces the amount of energy we need to produce and thereby reduces our greenhouse gas emissions and keeps a bit more "green" in your pocket.
