HAZARDOUS
WASTE
The City of Thunder Bay's Household
Hazardous Waste (HHW) Depot is located
at the John Street Landfill Site. Items
can be dropped off during regular landfill
site hours. There is no fee for using
the HHW depot.
Household Hazardous Waste results
from everyday products that are commonly
used to make our lives easier; products
such as cleaners, pesticides, paints,
batteries, fluorescent lights.
It is when these products are handled
improperly that they can pose significant
risks to people and ecosystems.
How does HHW harm our health
and the environment? When HHW is...
- sent to the dump face of the landfill
site, it can leach into the ground and
contaminate the ground water.
- poured down the drain, it can kill
the microbes that are used in sewage
treatment plants to break down wastes.
- burned, it can dissipate over a large
area.
- poured on the ground it can directly
poison soil, plants and water.
What can you do?
Incorporate the 3H's into your
daily life:
HALT ...ask yourself
if you really need the product or if there s a non-toxic alternative.
Try to limit use of any hazardous
products and buy only the amount needed.
HEED...all warnings,
labels and instructions for use and
handling of hazardous products and;
HANDLE ... with care.
