THERMOSTAT
RECYCLING DEPOTS
Conventional wall-mounted thermostats
are found in literally millions of homes
and buildings across North America.
A large proportion of these thermostats
contain mercury and are often termed
"mercury-switch" thermostats.
These instruments work extremely well
and are completely safe while in use.
They become a concern however during
renovations or changes to home heating
systems when they are removed and discarded,
often ending up in landfill sites. This
project is aimed at diverting mercury
from both the waste stream and the environment.
How Do I Participate?
Ecco Heating Supply
in Thunder Bay accepts
thermostats for recycling. If you are
a contractor or homeowner making renovations,
taking part is as easy as depositing
used thermostats in the receptacle
at Ecco.
Collected thermostats are
sent to Honeywell for recycling. Honeywell
recycles the mercury at a facility licensed
to remove and recycle this substance. Honeywell uses only recycled mercury in all thermostats it produces.
