WHAT IS SPRING UP TO CLEAN UP?
Spring-Up to Clean Up is a community-wide campaign funded by the City of Thunder Bay and delivered by EcoSuperior to help keep our City clean and beautiful.

In May 1996, Elizabeth DeBakker, a 10 year-old student at École Gron Morgon School, addressed Thunder Bay’s City Council expressing her concern over debris found in city parks. As a result of this deputation City Council passed a resolution requesting the development of a municipal clean up program. A steering committee was established to develop an action plan to accomplish the goals of Ms. DeBakker.

As a result, citizens all across Thunder Bay participated in our first ever community-wide clean up. The 1997 campaign was a success with sixty-five areas of the city cleaned up throughout the month of May by almost 5,000 participants. These numbers have increased over the years to as many as 11,000 volunteers cleaning up over 150 areas of the City.

Once again, scouting groups, schools, businesses, community groups, and other interested citizens are invited to take action and participate in cleaning up a park, school ground, neighborhood, recreation trail, or waterfront during this campaign. We are encouraging groups with an existing clean up program or any groups who wish to coordinate a new program, to schedule their clean up during May, 2008. Each group will tailor design their own clean up and will be provided with support where needed.

To promote environmental stewardship and responsibility, participants are encouraged to ‘check it out before they throw it out’. Recycling, reusing, composting and the proper disposal of hazardous wastes will be highlighted during the May clean up month.
