STREAM STEWARDSHIP
The ecological health of
Lake Superior
is determined in large part by the
health of its tributary streams. These
watercourses support resident fish
species, sustain healthy native animal
and plant populations, provide wildlife
corridors, and, at the same time,
contribute nutrient and sediment loads
to Lake Superior. Because streams are so
important to our region, EcoSuperior has
developed two programs to protect and
restore stream ecosystems.
Protect Our Streams provides
information on proper management of
streams, and Study Our Streams is
a monitoring program to assess stream
health. We gratefully acknowledge
support from our community partners:
Canada-Ontario Agreement, Upper Great
Lakes Management Unit, North Shore
Steelhead Association, Fisheries and
Oceans Canada, City of Thunder Bay,
Thunder Bay Field Naturalists, and Lake
Superior Binational Program.
The Study Our Streams program helps citizens get involved in protecting our local waterways. Click here to see a locally produced tv commercial promoting stream stewardship. You can also watch our Kick & Sweep sampling technique video
, part of the Citizen Monitoring workshops. To find out more about the program, call Lucie at 624-2143. For a Quicktime version of the videos click here.
